Our Approach to Ayurveda

At Natural Healing Services, we honor Ayurveda as one of the world’s oldest and most comprehensive systems of natural medicine. With historical roots spanning over two millennia, Ayurveda is more than a treatment; it is a sacred science of longevity. We integrate these time-honored traditions with modern wellness applications to provide a complementary path to health that addresses the root of your wellbeing.

Ayurveda Treatment

Ayurveda or Ayurvedic medicine, is a system of medicine with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent. Globalized and modernized practices derived from Ayurveda traditions are a type of complementary or alternative medicine. In the Western world, Ayurveda therapies and practices (which are manifold) have been integrated in general wellness applications and as well in some cases in medical use.

The main classical Ayurveda treatises begin with legendary accounts of the transmission of medical knowledge from the Gods to sages, and thence to human physicians. Thus, the Sushruta Samhita narrates how Dhanvantari, “greatest of the mighty celestial,” incarnated himself as Divodasa, a mythical king of Varanasi, who then taught medicine to a group of wise physicians, including Sushruta himself. Ayurveda therapies have varied and evolved over more than two millennia. Therapies are typically based on complex herbal compounds, while treatises introduced mineral and metal substances (perhaps under the influence of early Indian alchemy or rasasastra). Ancient Ayurveda treatises also taught surgical techniques, including rhinoplasty, perineal lithotomy, the suturing of wounds, and the extraction of foreign objects.

Traditional Indian Modalities

In the Ayurvedic tradition, wellness is achieved through the delicate balance of the Doshas (vital energies) and the purification of the body’s internal channels. Traditional Indian modalities are not merely physical treatments but are ritualistic therapies designed to detoxify, rejuvenate, and restore the flow of Prana (life force). Drawing from the classical texts of the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, these practices utilize the therapeutic properties of medicated oils, steam, and herbal infusions to promote deep healing.

Often described as the "loving hands" treatment, Abhyanga is a rhythmic massage performed with generous amounts of warm, herb-infused oils. Unlike Western massage, the focus is on transdermal absorption of the medicine to nourish the nervous system and improve circulation.

Abhyanga (Warm Herbal Oil Therapy)

Derived from the Sanskrit word swid (to sweat), this procedure uses medicated steam to open the body’s pores and liquefy toxins lodged in the tissues. It is traditionally performed following Abhyanga to help the herbal oils penetrate deeper into the skin.

Swedana (Steam Therapy)

This modality involves the application of warm poultices (boluses) filled with herbal powders, leaves, or specially treated rice. These bundles are dipped in medicated oil and applied to the body with specific pressure to alleviate joint pain, reduce inflammation, and improve muscle tone.

Kizhi (Herbal Compress Therapy)
Nasya (Nasal Herbal Oil Application)

As the "gateway to the head," the nasal passage is used in Nasya to deliver herbal preparations directly to the cranial region. This practice is essential for clearing the sinuses, enhancing mental clarity, and balancing the sensory organs.
